Universal Symbol Requirements

Symbol Specifications

SymbolAlabama Medical Cannabis Symbol
Minimum Size0.5 inch by 0.5 inch minimum.
  • Hard floor — scale up where the panel allows.
  • Must stay legible at final print size.
ColorsMust print in color.
  • Use the colors in the AMCC-approved file.
Notes on this section — 2
  • No contrast test in the rule; a legible background is our recommendation.
  • Do not work from third-party Pantone or CMYK values.
PlacementPrincipal display panel.
  • On the panel of the label, or of the package the label is affixed to.
Notes on this section — 1
  • New effective June 14, 2026 — re-check artwork designed before that date.
How To ObtainThe symbol is published in the rule itself, as Appendix A to Chapter 538-X-6.
  • Appendix A carries the symbol the Commission approved on January 26, 2026.
  • Work from Appendix A — do not redraw it or accept a vendor's recreation.
  • Submit packaging and label exemplars to AMCC and get sign-off before a production run.
Notes on this section — 1
  • Appendix A is itself a new rule, published April 30, 2026 and effective June 14, 2026. Artwork drawn before that date predates it.

Marks the product as medical cannabis.

  • Carries no numbers.
  • One symbol for every product — no potency tiering.
  • Cannabinoid content and potency print as a separate element.

Processor label (Ala. Admin. Code r. 538-X-6-.05(2))2
Print the wording exactly as codified. It may not be shortened, softened, or supplemented with benefit language — r. 538-X-6-.05(2)(n) bars any statement advertising health or therapeutic benefits, and (2)(b) requires print legible to a patient or caregiver reading at a sixth-grade level.
Every Processor-packaged medical cannabis product, all authorized product forms. The rule reads "Labels, or if space is not available, a package insert, must contain the following:" — so this paragraph may move to a package insert ONLY where label space is not available. That is a space-driven fallback, not the labeler's choice.
Exact text required

Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission (AMCC) prescribes this wording. Reproduce it character for character, including capitalization and punctuation.

WARNING: This product may make you drowsy or dizzy. Do not drink alcohol with this product. Use care when operating a vehicle or other machinery. Taking this product with medication may lead to harmful side effects or complications. Consult your physician before taking this product with any medication. Women who are breastfeeding, pregnant, or plan to become pregnant should discuss medical cannabis use with their physicians.
Every Processor-packaged medical cannabis product, all authorized product forms. Must be printed on the label itself — there is no package-insert alternative, because the space-unavailable clause sits inside paragraph (l) and does not reach (2)(j).

Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission (AMCC) prescribes this wording. Reproduce it character for character, including capitalization and punctuation.

Keep out of reach of children.

Packaging & Labeling Rules

Child-ResistantContainers must be child-resistant and tamper-evident, and artwork has to pass Alabama's written list of what counts as attractive to minors.
  • Containers: child-resistant and tamper-evident.
  • No cartoons or similar artistic renderings.
  • No toys, and no copies of commercially available candy.
  • No characters or media aimed primarily at minors.
  • No media whose audience is more than 15% minors.
  • No depictions of minors, animals, or fruits.
  • No packaging shaped like a non-cannabis consumer product of a type commonly marketed to minors.
  • No symbols or language associated with youth.
  • No celebrities whose audience or following is more than 15% minors.
  • Fruit and animal motifs are the trap here — check botanical art before you proof.
Notes on this section — 1
  • The rule names no child-resistance test standard: no 16 CFR 1700 or ASTM reference.
Ala. Admin. Code r. 538-X-6-.05(1)(a)-(e) and (2)(m); enumerated definition at r. 538-X-6-.02(1)
LabelingTwo labels land on every package: the processor prints one, the dispensary adds a patient-specific one at sale.
  • Label must be securely attached and legible.
  • Write to a sixth-grade reading level.
  • Processor label: processor name AND the processor's license identification number.
  • Processor label: cultivator name AND the cultivator's license identification number.
  • The cultivator's name and licence number print on the label — not only behind the QR code.
  • Processor label: product type.
  • Processor label: lot number and batch number — the rule asks for both.
  • Print a QR code or digital image tied to the Statewide Seed-to-Sale Tracking System.
  • Keep the code's quiet zone clean — no varnish, foil, or artwork bleeding in.
  • Behind the code: sourcing cultivator or integrated facility, processor name and facility, product type, processing and packaging date.
  • Behind the code: State Testing Laboratory approval date, expiration date or a note that none applies, Alabama Poison Control contact.
  • Reserve clear, uncluttered space for the dispensary's point-of-sale label.
  • Dispensary adds: patient name and card number, caregiver name and card number if applicable.
  • Dispensary adds: certifying physician's name and contact information.
  • Dispensary adds: amount and type dispensed, plus date and time dispensed.
  • Dispensary adds: physician dosing comments and maximum daily dosage.
Notes on this section — 3
  • Poison Control contact is published on the AMCC website and can change — pull it fresh before each run.
  • Behind-the-code content is not printed. Do not merge it into package copy.
  • Processing and packaging dates and the facility of origin sit behind the code at (2)(o), not on the printed label. Nothing in r. 538-X-6-.05 requires harvest information on a Processor label.
Ala. Admin. Code r. 538-X-6-.05(2)(a)-(f), (2)(k) and the digital-coding enumeration at (2)(o); dispensary label at r. 538-X-8-.03(6)
THC SymbolOne state symbol that carries no numbers, plus a separate printed potency line — designers confuse the two.
  • Symbol: 0.5 inch by 0.5 inch minimum.
  • Print the symbol in color.
  • Place it on the principal display panel of the label, or of the package the label is affixed to.
  • No THC tiering — there is no separate high-potency mark.
  • Print cannabinoid content and potency as their own label element.
  • Print the amount, number, or count of product in the package.
Notes on this section — 2
  • Principal-display-panel placement is new as of June 14, 2026. Re-check artwork drawn before that date.
  • The same amendment incorporates the approved symbol as Appendix A to Chapter 538-X-6 — the artwork is in the rule, not only on request.
Ala. Admin. Code r. 538-X-6-.05(2)(g), (2)(h), (2)(i), as amended eff. 6/14/2026; artwork at r. 538-X-6-A (Appendix A), eff. 6/14/2026
Health WarningsAlabama controls health language by banning claims rather than requiring a disclaimer.
  • No false statements anywhere on the label.
  • No statement advertising a health or therapeutic benefit.
  • The two required warning statements live in the warnings list, not here.
Ala. Admin. Code r. 538-X-6-.05(1)(f) and (2)(n)
Serving SizeDosing information must appear on the label, but Alabama prescribes no format for it.
  • Print product dosing information on the label.
  • Cannabinoid content and potency print separately — see the symbol row.
  • Leave space for the dispensary's dosing comments and maximum daily dosage, added at sale.
Notes on this section — 2
  • No mg-per-serving or per-package cap appears in the material.
  • No prescribed units or display format for the dosing line — confirm with AMCC before a plate is cut.
Ala. Admin. Code r. 538-X-6-.05(2); dispensary dosing detail at r. 538-X-8-.03(6)
Opaque PackagingNo opacity requirement — clear and windowed packaging is allowed.
  • No opacity rule appears in Chapter 538-X-6. This is genuinely open, not conditional.
  • A window still has to clear the attractive-to-minors test for whatever it puts on display.
Ala. Admin. Code r. 538-X-6-.05(2)(m); definition at r. 538-X-6-.02(1)
ResealableNo resealability requirement. The only closure mandates are child-resistant and tamper-evident.
  • No resealable-closure rule exists in the chapter, and no product type triggers one.
Ala. Admin. Code r. 538-X-6-.05(1)(a)-(e)
Notable RulesMedical-only, non-smokable, and a market that is only weeks old.
  • Permitted forms: tablets, capsules, tinctures, patches, gels, oils, and gummies.
  • Peach is the only permitted flavor for gelatinous cube, cuboid AND lozenge products — not gummies alone.
  • Baked goods and candies are not permitted — there is no general edible category.
  • No smokable forms, so no flower or pre-roll packaging.
  • Cartoons and minor-attractive artwork are prohibited — see the child-resistant row.
  • No health or therapeutic benefit claims anywhere.
  • First dispensary opened June 4, 2026; more expected during summer 2026.
Notes on this section — 2
  • Three dispensary licenses awarded December 2025 (CCS of Alabama, GP6 Wellness, RJK Holdings) — pending confirmation against AMCC licensee records.
  • Rules amended effective June 14, 2026. Expect further churn; re-check before a long production run.
Ala. Admin. Code ch. 538-X-6; universal peach flavor at r. 538-X-6-.04(2)(e), citing Code of Ala. 1975 § 20-2A-63(f); AMCC program announcements
